What to do in Saint-Jean-de-Luz at Easter Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Saint-Jean-de-Luz the spring: a pleasant surprise

Less crowded than in July, the city is particularly pleasant at Easter. The outdoor cafes are out, the shopkeepers are out, but the crowds haven’t arrived yet. It’s the perfect time to stroll around at a leisurely pace and show your children the city in the best possible setting.

The morning market, the cobblestone streets, the chocolate shops’ display windows overflowing with Easter treats, the fishing boats in the harbor, the Basque cake at the local bakery: Saint-Jean-de-Luz April has that gentle feeling of things slowly getting back to normal, quietly and without haste.

Parc Victoria

As the Easter holidays approach, Parc Victoria to life. The two-hundred-year-old trees are sprouting new leaves, the shaded paths are once again becoming children’s favorite playground, and the terraces are once again welcoming guests for breakfast in the sun. The pool opens for the season’s first swims, and the Jatera! restaurant fires up its stoves on April 24—only to shut them down in October.

Spanning nearly one hectare in the heart of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the park offers a rare setting: a preserved, lush green space, sheltered from noise, where families can gather without any constraints. The 12 rooms and suites at the Villa Victorienne and the 12 apartments in the residence—ideal for families seeking more space and independence—are ready to welcome guests for the first summer vacation of the season.

Our ideas for a family week

Walks and hikes

Spring is the perfect season to explore the coastal trail. The 25-kilometer route connecting Bidart to Hendaye runs along a wild and spectacular coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic. For families, the distance is easily adaptable: a 5- to 8-kilometer walk from Saint-Jean-de-Luz Socoa or toward Guéthary is enough for a lovely half-day of fresh air, cliffs, and coves to explore.

For younger children, the marked trails around the bay are stroller-friendly, allowing them to explore the seaside at their own pace.

Family Cycling

Starting at Easter, Parc Victoria electric bike rentals so you can explore the surrounding area. Our family favorite: riding along the Atlantic on La Vélodyssée, the coastal route that winds through dunes, pine forests, and along the seashore. On the paved sections between Saint-Jean-de-Luz Hendaye, the road is gentle, the scenery breathtaking, and even the youngest children—with a child seat or trailer—can easily handle the distance.

A day trip, a picnic in the dunes, and a return to Parc Victoria the late afternoon: it doesn't get much better than that.

A moment of relaxation

Family vacations are wonderful. They can also be exhausting. That’s whatthe Parc Victoria wellness area is for: massages, treatments, and moments of relaxation in a peaceful setting while the kids enjoy the park or the pool. The yoga sessions offered in the garden, surrounded by pine trees and Basque-style houses, let you take a breather and reconnect—with yourself, with nature, and with the silence we often forget about the rest of the year.

After a gourmet morning, set off to discover the Basque vineyards.

Enjoy a guided tour of the vineyards, where you'll learn more about winemaking techniques and local viticultural history. The tour continues with a wine tasting, accompanied by delicious tapas.

Easter Weather in the Basque Country – What You Need to Know

The Basque Country in April offers a bountiful yet unpredictable spring. Sunny days are frequent and often mild—averaging 15 to 18 °C—but a few showers are always possible. The good news: the Basque coast knows how to reinvent itself on cloudy days. A visit to old Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a break for hot chocolate and Basque cake in a café, a morning at the spa: there’s never bad weather here, just different plans.

Practical tips:

Pack appropriate layers: cool mornings, often mild afternoons
A lightweight waterproof jacket for walks along the coastal trail
Book bikes and wellness treatments in advance, especially during Easter week
