Summer has a home here
One July morning at Parc Victoria. Coffee is served by the pool, under the pine trees. Somewhere beyond the walls, Saint-Jean-de-Luz to wake up. The ocean, however, has been here for millennia—and it will wait. Here, there’s no rush. Experience summer in the heart of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, on the bay side
Just a stone's throw from Parc Victoria, Saint-Jean-de-Luz the most authentic side of the Basque Country. The town is both a charming historic town and a lively seaside resort, without ever succumbing to the pitfalls of mass tourism.
With its narrow streets lined with red and green half-timbered houses, its bustling market, its seafood restaurants, the famous macarons at Maison Adam, and the must-try Basque cake, everything here invites you to slow down, stop, and savor the moment. The crescent-shaped bay, one of the most beautiful on the Atlantic coast, offers a beach sheltered from the currents, ideal for families and those who love to relax.
In the summer, the city buzzes with activity. The outdoor cafes are packed, children play Basque pelota on the frontons, and boats return to port with the morning’s catch. And yet, just a few steps away from all this hustle and bustle, Parc Victoria its quiet, its scent of pine resin, and its own unique rhythm.
The City Celebrates
Saint-Jean-de-Luz more itself than in the summer, when festivities punctuate the weeks and turn every evening into an opportunity to get together.
Night markets take over the waterfront several times a week: local farmers, Basque artisans, and the scents of cheese and Espelette pepper mingle with the sea breeze. The Saint-Jean Festival in June marks the official start of summer with bonfires and traditional dances. In July, the Tuna Festival passionately celebrates the crown jewel of the local fishing industry—with concerts, parades, entertainment at the port, and, of course, tuna prepared in every possible way. Throughout the season, outdoor concerts and fireworks over the bay punctuate the warm nights, transforming the city into an open-air stage until very late.
The Basque Country knows how to throw a party with that special kind of generosity, where everyone is welcome and where the spirit of togetherness is never just an empty phrase.
